UNITED v LIVERPOOL POSTPONED DUE TO PROTEST

Another busy Sunday of football is once more overshadowed by a big developing story. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Manchester United fans protested at Old Trafford this afternoon to show their discontent in their club's ownership.

A group of fans breached stadium security and made their way on to the pitch at Old Trafford around 2pm, just over 2 hours before United's game against Liverpool was due to kick-off.

As speculation spread and doubts over the game being played grew it was finally announced at around 5.30pm that the game was not going to be played this evening (2 May) and was to be rescheduled for a later date.

The Premier League released their statement which read:

Statement released by the Premier League on Sunday afternoon

Many TV pundits and former footballers made their views on the protest known on Sky Sports earlier today. Sky pundit and former Manchester United player Gary Neville claiming the protest as "a consequence of Manchester United owners' actions two weeks ago." Neville is referring to the plans of the European Super League which collapsed with 48 hours of announcement.

Another former Manchester United legend Roy Keane was amongst the panel and he expressed his disappointment in the game being postponed but also exclaimed, "This is just the start of it for United fans, I guarentee you." Keane continued, "their (the fans') plan is for the United owners to give in and sell the club."

Despite no football being kicked on the pitch at Old Trafford this weekend, it's not the actions of the players that will be making headlines, it is the actions of fans and protestors that will splash the back pages and dominate the footballing world.

UPDATE

No more is known on the rescheduling of the fixture but questions are being asked about when it can be played with a tight end of the season schedule ahead.
