UNITED MAKE DISAPPOINTING RETURN TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Young Boys 95th minute winner scored by Jordon Siebatcheu

It was another disastrous Champions League night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United. They were beaten 2-1 by Young Boys in Bern after a last-minute winning goal.

The night started well for United with Cristiano Ronaldo getting his 3rd goal in 2 games after just 13 minutes. It was a quiet start to the game however with neither team creating a lot of chances in the first half.

The downfall for the visitors came in the 35th minute when Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a challenge on Christopher Martins and the referee showed the English right-back a straight red card.

Some on social media referred to the decision as ‘harsh’ and explained in their view ‘the game is gone.' With new UEFA guidelines on the showing of a red card prior to the European Championships in the summer, the referee according to the rules was well within his rights to show the player a red.

Ole and the coaching staff made a quick substitution after the sending off and Diogo Dalot came on to replace summer signing Jadon Sancho after the winger had shown very little creativity and pace in the game in the first 40 minutes.

Half time came quickly and with only 15 minutes to think of a plan for the final 45 minutes on how to deny Young Boys anything from the game, United were under pressure.

A halftime swap of Donny van de Beek and Raphael Varane meant that United had decided to play 5 at the back. This decision once again came with some backlash from Manchester United fans saying ‘when will Donny get a chance’ and ‘he was our best midfielder’, it was clear that fans disagreed with Ole’s tactical change.

20 minutes into the second period and the inevitable happened, Young Boys fought their way back into the game with a great equalising goal from Moumi Ngamaleu passed David De Gea and the hosts were on for a point.

Continuing to dominate possession and applying constant pressure on Man United the feeling was that Young Boys had grown in confidence and weren’t going to let the point slip away from them.

More changes from Solskjaer again causing confusion and disbelief from fans. A double substitution of Ronaldo and Fernandes on the 72nd minute for Lingard and Matic was met once against by fan protests, ‘Why is he bringing off are two best players’ and ‘cowardly from Ole’.

Those changes would prove to be crucial in United conceding again. With less than 60 seconds on the clock and the visitors seemingly holding on for a point away from home, Jesse Lingard makes a weak pass back to De Gea and bursting into the box was Jordan Siebatcheu who slotted the ball past the goalkeeper and won the game for Young Boys.

The full-time whistle was met with roaring cheers and happiness from the home fans who were celebrating a well-deserved victory over a huge club. Those celebrations continued long into the night without pause.

So what next for Ole? Well, the Norweigan has to motivate his players for another game this weekend in the Premier League. They are continuing on the road with a visit to the capital to face high-flying West Ham. The hammers are currently unbeaten in the new season and with European football of their own now it is set to be a tie worth watching.
