Another dismal midweek defeat for Manchester United again and after a poor start to their Champions League campaign last week, it’s a poor start in terms of domestic cup competitions this week.
It was a well-fought victory for the visitors to Old Trafford, West Ham. They clung on to a 1-0 lead for over 80 minutes to get their first win at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ since 2007, making it their first in the last 18 games in all competitions.
David Moyes’ side had to overcome a heartbreaking defeat to United at the weekend as former Hammer’s player Jesse Lingard scored the winning goal at the London Stadium but there were no signs of a hangover from the Londoners in the game.
West Ham started the game brightly, dominating the ball and attacking well in the final third in the first 15 minutes. It was in that first 15 where they broke the deadlock. Great play from Ryan Fredericks on the right to cut the ball back for Manuel Lanzini to slot it home.
A simple yet fantastic passage of play from West Ham but it seemed all too easy to get past the Manchester United defenders. Not forgetting the fact that both teams were nearly completely changed from the weekend however it was a poor display from United defensively.
The game levelled out after the visitor’s scored, Man United started to create a few chances themselves. In total over the 90 minutes, the hosts had 27 shots on the opposition goal and only 6 reaching the target. A game you could argue that United were sloppy in and weren’t anywhere near accurate or clinical enough.
Both teams made all three substitutions by the 80th minute with one final throw of the dice from both managers to get their respective sides a result.
It was David Moyes’ men who threatened in most of the final 5 minutes with big chances for a second goal from Mark Noble and Jarrod Bowen but both saved by Dean Henderson.
Jon Moss blew the final whistle after 94 minutes of tension-filled football. Not a game with an abundance of goals but one that West Ham fans will not forget for a while.
In terms of the other teams that progressed into the fourth round, Brighton’s Aaron Connolly sealed a 2-0 win for the Seagulls against Swansea. Arsenal got two late goals to beat League One opposition in AFC Wimbledon 3-0.
Both Chelsea and Tottenham had to face penalty shootouts against Aston Villa and Wolves respectively but both came out on top. Also, Leicester got a 2-0 win over Millwall at the Den.
Fourth Round Draw
The draw was completed and the eight ties for the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup are as follows:

Some really interesting ties in the fourth round, with West Ham hosting the current holders of the Carabao Cup, Manchester City, and also a great day for Preston who will be hosting Liverpool also.
The fourth round ties will be played on the week commencing the 25 October and the TV games will be announced by the EFL in due course.
