SPAIN FALL FOUL OF FRANCE COMEBACK IN FINAL

Hugo Lloris lifted the trophy as France won their first Nations League title

It was a game of great excitement. The San Siro in Milan put on a spectacular display for the second-ever Nations League Final.

To claim the cliché, it was a game of two halves in the end. Neither team showed any attacking intent in the first 45 minutes.

It took France’s Theo Hernandez to hit the crossbar to kick the game into life and open the game up.

Less than a minute after the French wingback hit the bar, Spain had gone down the other end and slide the ball into the back of the world champions’ net.

It was a beautifully taken strike into the far post by Spain’s main creator in the tournament, First Name? Oyarzabal, who had set up the two goals in the semi-final to send Spain into their debut final in the competition.

It was just 90 seconds later when the French equaliser came. It all started with referee Anthony Taylor playing the advantage, which led to the goal. In-form Karim Benzema scored with an outrageous curling shot into the top bins.

It was then that it was known, anything can still happen. The game continued to be end to end with one attack ending and another one starting right away.

It took France another 13 minutes before their superstar striker Kylian Mbappé sealed the deal and scored the winning goal. A through ball from __ played the French starlet in behind the Spain defence and with a simple step-over, he rolled it past Unai Simon.

There was some controversy over the winning goal, however, Video Assistant Referee Stuart Attwell looked for a possible offside against Mbappé, which was the case, nonetheless, the goal was allowed due to a touch from Eric Garcia which created a new phase of play.

Another comeback victory for the World Champions, who will now look ahead to trying to defend their crown in just over 12 months time when the 2022 World Cup gets underway in Qatar.

There was an uproar of celebration in the San Siro with the French fans in full voice to show their support for their team.

After Spain received their runners-up medals and the France team received their winner’s medals, the President of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, presented the trophy to French captain Hugo Lloris, who himself played a huge part in the final.

The collective building of excitement from the players was topped off by an array of trophy lifting celebrations from the whole French team.

Another trophy in the cabinet and now the hat trick of International trophies - World Cup, European Championships and Nations League.

The Nations League will return in the 2022-23 season for another campaign. The host of the new campaign is yet to be announced by UEFA. The format of the competition is not yet confirmed to change and all will be revealed by the governing body for European football in due course.
