Australian referee Jarred Gillett is to become the first overseas referee to officiate a Premier League game when he takes control of Watford v Newcastle.
Gillett was promoted to the Select Group 1 of referees just this season, after refereeing in the Championship and other English competitions in previous seasons.
He started off his career refereeing in the A-League in his home country of Australia for nine years before moving to England at the start of the 2019/20 season.
Starting off in the EFL, Gillett has refereed in all 3 EFL leagues over the last two seasons, taking control of over 60 games in the EFL including the Championship Play-Off Semi-Final last season.
The Australian’s first game in the Premier League will be one to watch, with Newcastle and Watford being the bookie's favourites for relegation. The Magpies are still winless this season whereas Watford have 2 wins from their first 5 and are sitting 11th in the league.
Gillett will be officiating with Lee Betts and Constantine Hatzidakis as assistants and Martin Atkinson as the fourth official while Craig Pawson is in charge of VAR.
Despite it not being available for legal TV viewing in the UK, we’ll be tuning in to Match of the Day on Saturday evening to see how Jarred Gillett’s debut pans out.

Gillett took part in recording the referee’s conversations with both officials in person and in the VAR booth in 2017.
