MASON GREENWOOD ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF RAPE & "THREATS TO KILL"

It is a story that has shocked not only the footballing world but the wider public alike. 20 year old Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was arrested on Sunday evening after the release of disturbing images and audio on Instagram.

The footage was posted to the Instagram account of Greenwood’s supposed girlfriend Harriet Robson before being deleted shortly after. The pictures showed someone with a bruise-covered body and what can only be described as horrifying and shocking audio could be heard.

The player’s club, Manchester United, released a statement on Sunday afternoon saying the player would not train with or play games for the club “until further notice”. The club also stated that they do not tolerate any kind of abuse.

Greater Manchester Police then later arrested Greenwood on suspicion of assault and rape. Before then further arresting him on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

Fans around the globe and the public in general have been outraged by the developments with one explaining, “lock him up and throw away the key”. Another fan wrote, “Disgusting behaviour but let justice run its course.”

One thing is for sure fans were equally appalled by the players actions and united in condemning the actions of the footballer who has come under fire in the past by breaching covid rules in 2020 during the international trip to Iceland.

Police had appealed for an extension in their time to question Greenwood which allows up to 96 hours for questioning to be done but after his re-arrest they will have longer to question with new charges now on the table.

Companies such as EA Sports and Nike have distanced themselves from Greenwood in recent days with the sports brand terminating his sponsorship with them and EA Sports removing Greenwood from all modes of their game, FIFA.

So what next for Greenwood? It is a difficult question to answer at this time. Depending on whether GMP charges the 20 year old Greenwood’s future career will continue to hang in the balance and be riddled with uncertainty. Many football fans have already said he should never play football again while some have said he deserves another chance.

For now we await the outcome of the police investigation and sit with bated breath contemplating what will happen to a footballer that many had previously called the ‘Starboy’.

Greenwood has now been released on bail with the GMP confirming 'A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation.'
