What a game of football we witnessed last night. Whether you’re neutral or not that game was magnificent compared to other games between the bitter rivals.
Manchester United opened the scoring just 10 minutes in with good intricate play in the Liverpool box and Bruno Fernandes’ shot was deflected in by Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips. However, The No.47 redeemed himself by setting up the equaliser, snatching the ball back and a nice pass to Diogo Jota who flicked it passed Dean Henderson.
Just 10 minutes later and in the last minute of the first half, a wonderful set-piece delivery from Trent Alexander-Arnold from the right to the back post to find Bobby Firmino for Liverpool’s second. The whirlwind of emotion in the first half was not about to end.
The second half begins and Manchester United playing out from the back give the ball away to Thiago who finds Alexander-Arnold who shoots at Dean Henderson, but a clumsy mistake and Bobby Firmino is right there to scoop it over the keeper and into the United net, 3-1!
Less than twenty minutes later United get a goal back with great play between Fernandes, Cavani and Rashford who slides it past Alison and into the far corner. United building and creating chances and had a great chance to equalise but last ditch defending and blocking from both Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams denied Mason Greenwood.
With United pushing for an equaliser, it meant there was an abundance of space for the counter-attack from Liverpool and that is exactly what happened substitute Curtis Jones with a first time hit to Mo Salah who is one-on-one with the goalkeeper and knocks it in to wrap up the game for Liverpool in the 90th minute of the game.
It was a goal fest at Old Trafford and once again Manchester United come out of it the losing team. That is now their 6th league defeat of the season all of which were home games.
It means that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain in 2nd place with 70 points, 4 ahead of Leicester and have now 2 games remaining with nothing to play for. On the other hand, Jurgen Klopp’s men will feel boosted by the win and leapfrog West Ham into 5th and 4 points off Chelsea and The Reds have a game in hand. Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League football next season have just been electrified.
