All that can be said is ‘WHAT!?’
‘Alisson Becker, Liverpool’s goalkeeper, scored a 95th minute header from a corner to win his team the game!’
To even put those words together in a sentence sounds bizarre. It makes Alisson the only Liverpool goalkeeper to have ever scored in a competitive match and the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to score the winner and the first to score a header.
Despite the year that the Brazilian has had he has continued to perform to the highest level possible for Liverpool. He is most definitely the world’s best goalkeeper!
This situation just intensifies how remarkably unbelievable this season has been, with crazy shorelines, the European Super League, A penalty after the final whistle, VAR in general and now goalkeeper’s scoring world-class striker-like headers.
It comes as a lucky escape for Liverpool who once again were behind after just 15 minutes through a simple Hal Robson-Kanu run between the two centre-backs and a nice slotted finish.
Despite holding firm and defending well West Brom lost their lead through a fantastic instinctive finish in to the bottom left-corner from Mo Salah in the 34th minute.
However, there was a contentious refereeing decision. Referee Mike Dean awarded Liverpool a free kick after interfering with play although Dean never touched the ball. The argument was that he should have given an uncontested drop ball. From that free-kick, it is argued, that Liverpool then create the chance for the Salah goal.
So it was level at Half-Time. Into the second half and West Brom had put the ball in the net again, but, VAR gets involved. Kyle Bartley guides the ball into the Liverpool net from a West Brom header, however, VAR had spotted that a West Brom player blocks the view of Alisson and therefore the goal was disallowed. Correct decision!
And it’s obvious what comes next. Liverpool get a last-second corner on the left-hand side. Out of nowhere, running up the pitch and into the Baggies’ 18 yard box is Alisson Becker. No one picks him up.
A scintillating cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold onto the head of the Liverpool goalie who fires it home for the winner. The scenes of elation and disbelief on the faces of the players and the Liverpool bench as well. As Mike Dean blows the Full Time whistle, Alisson breaks down into tears.
In an emotional post-match interview, Alisson paid tribute to his father, who passed away earlier this year due to a fatal accident. He said, “I hope he was here to see it, I'm sure he is celebrating with God at his side.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had only one word for the situation. “Wow,” he said, “"It was spectacular and a good game. Winning that way is really special. I couldn't be happier.”
Opposing emotions plagued the Baggies’ boss, Sam Allardyce’s interview. Allardyce expressed his disappointment in the officials and stated that, “We didn't want a result snatched away from us, not by Liverpool but by the decisions made today.”
So the race for Top 4 continues for Jurgen Klopp and his players who find themselves just a point behind Chelsea who occupy 4th place and 3 points behind Leicester in 3rd. The former Champions travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley on Wednesday evening and it’s in Liverpool’s hands as Leicester and Chelsea play each other on Tuesday night.
Is there another twist in the tale of the Top 4 Race? We only have another 6 days to wait and see!
