As the final whistle was blown on another round of the Scottish Premiership last night, Celtic maintained their 9-point lead over bitter rivals Rangers at the top of the table.
Three first half goals from Greg Taylor, Daizen Maeda, and the inevitable net-bulger from top goalscorer Kyogo sealed the points for the current title holders and league leaders at Celtic Park.
It came as Rangers’ visit to 3rd placed Hearts ended with the same scoreline in the favour of Michael Beale’s side. An Alfredo Morelos brace and a Tillman strike in the first half also maintained Rangers’ consistent form also.
The top two have a significant lead on the other teams in the league with 3rd placed Hearts now 19 points behind Rangers and 28 points behind Celtic at the top.
It sees the return of the usual argument batted at Scottish football every season in the fact that the top two not only have a massive points lead on everyone else but also the fact that none of the other 10 clubs in the division have the financial power to even catch up with the Glasgow clubs.
Moving that debate to the side for a moment. In other results, Aberdeen succumbed to another defeat in the league as three St. Mirren goals inflicted a third straight defeat for the Pittodrie side. Aberdeen have now conceded 15 goals in 4 games in all competitions and have dropped into the bottom six in the division sitting in 7th on 29 points.
Kilmarnock picked up a narrow win over Dundee United through a Daniel Armstrong goal in the 35th minute of the game. The home side had attacking dominance having 27 shots compared to United’s 7 shots. Dundee United now sit bottom of the table on 20 points however they have played one less game than the rest.
In the final game of the evening, St Johnstone’s visit to Motherwell ended with the visitors heading back with all three points and a clean sheet to boot. The victory end’s the saints’ run of 7 consecutive defeats. Drey Wright and Melker Hallberg’s goals either side of the half time interval added to Motherwell’s dismay and worries of relegation as they also sit joint bottom of the table on 20 points having also played a game less.
So, the consistency of Ange Postecoglou’s side has them steaming towards their second consecutive title under the Aussie, and the club’s 11th title out of the last 12 making it their 53rd title in their history. Moreover, despite Ranger’s continuous run of good form they are now on course for their 34th 2nd place finish in the Scottish top flight, failing to overcome their Old-Firm rivals.
