Does today mark the day that football died? Are we witnessing the end of football as we know it? What will happen to fans, players and managers?
These are the questions that are running through the minds of everyone across the footballing world. The last 12-24 hours have been the most significant in recent football history.
The so-called ‘Big Six’ of the Premier League have announced that they will be some of the founding members of a new European Super League. Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham announced at around 11pm on Sunday evening that they are progressing with plans to create and run a breakaway super league.
Other European clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are amongst the 12 clubs that have announced this statement. The newly named ‘The Super League’ has been proposed to start ‘as soon as practicable’.
Europe’s biggest leagues and football associations have solely condemned this including the Premier League and UEFA. Threats such as expulsions and bans from domestic, European and world competitions have been made from these organisations over the last 24 hours.
In the latest breaking news this morning, Daniel Levy and Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Jose Mourinho as of immediate effect. Little is known on the reasoning of Mourinho’s sacking but one can only assume it is related to the current developing story.
More to follow.
