ANFIELD ERUPTS AS TRENT SCORES SCREAMER

Once again Liverpool have pulled it off, making their fans feel nervous about a narrow lead and then blasting their fears with a wildly unbelievable goal at the death.

Trent Alexander Arnold’s wonderstruck goal in the 87th minute secured the win for the Reds who they are now just a point behind current champions Manchester City.

The night was also capped off with the fact that local rivals Everton travelled down to the capital and held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw which gave Klopp’s men a 3 point advantage on the European champions in the table.

This all comes as Liverpool announced that three of their players had suspected positive Covid tests and will not be involved in the match. They weren’t just any players with both Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho the two major blows for the Redmen.

Curtis Jones, who only returned to light training this week, was the other player who had a suspected positive test.

Those suspected cases are still to be confirmed.

But it was Newcastle who stole the lead in the 7th minute with former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey shooting from range to wrong foot the goalkeeper and smash the Magpies into the lead.

It was 15 minutes later before Liverpool controversially equalised in the match. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe explained the game should’ve been stopped before the ball was in the net after one of his players went down holding his head.

Despite this Mike Dean let the game continue and Diogo Jota equalised at the second time of asking after Dubravka blocked the Portuguese’s first attempt.

It took the Premier league’s top goalscorer just 4 further minutes to find the back of the net for his 15th of the season, an unbelievable feat considering we are still 8 days from Christmas.

It is Salah’s 22nd goal of the season for Liverpool and is well on track to beat his 2017-18 season record of 44 goals in a single season for the Reds.

Despite all the Liverpool dominance in the first half it was only 2 goals that they could produce before the break.

In the second period the teams were more evenly matched with Newcastle being solid and resolute in defence. It didn’t stop the chances though with Liverpool having 23 attempts on the Newcastle goal and having almost 75% possession of the ball throughout the game.

Newcastle had a few bright moments on the counter-attack, most notably with Ryan Fraser who was tackled last ditch by Alexander-Arnold.

It was however Alexander-Arnold who had the last laugh. A quick free kick from Liverpool played along the ground, passed to Trent who took a touch before rocketing the ball through the many bodies, including Mike Dean the referee, and into the top left corner of the Newcastle net.

Anfield erupted at the Gerrard-esque wonder goal and the England right-back has resurfaced the argument of being the “Best Right-Back in the World”.

The ‘scouser in our team’ also picked up the Man of the Match award for what could make the other goal of the season contenders look like tap-ins.

So 3 points and an 8 consecutive win for Liverpool now unbeaten in 10 against Newcastle in all competitions. Next up for the league challengers is a trip to the capital once more to face Antonio Conte’s Tottenham, Covid-permitting of course, on Sunday.
